Short Course on Microfluidics and Micro-scale Transport:
Health Care and Electronics Cooling to Oil and Gas Applications
Thursday, June 23, 2011 – Saturday, June 25, 2011
Microscale transport processes and microfluidics are becoming increasingly important in key emerging applications due to their inherent advantages of high transfer coefficients, efficient process management, miniaturization of devices for specific applications, and addressability of cellular length scales. The course will introduce the interdisciplinary use of engineering, biology, chemistry and physics to achieve devices with specific functionalities, with their applications ranging from biotechnological and biomedical engineering to electronic chip cooling, oil/water displacements in porous media, and nano-scale transport in coal beds and gas shales.

The Lecture Series will highlight some of these challenging applications and the fundamental scientific issues that need to be addressed in responding to the pertinent technological challenges. The course is intended for beginners as well as established researchers. There will be a special session to provide opportunities for interactive dialog among the participants.

Short Course on Computational Fluid Dynamics for Industry
Monday, June 27, 2011 – Tuesday, June 28, 2011
CFD for Industry is a short course that aims at training industry professionals in the proper use of Computational Fluid Dynamics software. Today’s CFD packages are increasingly powerful and robust, commercial packages also user-friendly, but their increased ability to deliver a converged result may be misleading. This short course focuses on the methodical process of setting up correctly your CFD simulation and of evaluating the quality of your solution, regardless of the software package used. Qualitative and quantitative criteria for selecting the best grid, domain size, convergence threshold, and other parameters will be taught and demonstrated during practice sessions.

This unique course, developed by Dr. Carlos Lange, focuses on practical and rigorous methodologies for simulation setup, verification and validation, as detailed in the attached brochure. The course is aimed not only at CFD novices, but also at professionals with experience, who want to reinforce their methodology skills.
