2012 Extravaganza Revisited
It was a dark and stormy night……..Actually it was a beautiful late winters day and all the finest in the HVAC and Plumbing industries gathered at the Ramada Conference Centre in Edmonton for what was being billed as “THE” event of the year.
The event was a mix of technical training, ASHRAE Alberta Tradeshow, Luncheon with Distinguished Lecturer, and annual joint meeting with our MCA bretheren.
Starting out bright and early the ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) course on Net Zero Energy buidlings was well atended and recieved a geat deal of positive fedback. Dunstan Macauley from Maryland taught a very informative class on the Design, Maintenance, and Technology surrounding Net Zero Energy Buidlings. Students came out of this program with a great deal of knowledge and liekly a few ideas for future projects.
The morning training session was followed up by a luncheon with a persentation from Distinguished Lecturer Dennis Knight, on Integrated Design. The presentation was on detailed acount of various aspects within Integrated Design of projects, including a section focusing on BIM and its uses on projects. Quite adifferent take on teh traditional approach that I am sure the attendees appreciated and
Once the lunch program was complete, the ASHRAE Alberta Tradeshow Floor opened bringing in several hundred members from all aspects of the building industry. Building Owners and Operators, Government Officials, Engineers, Architects and Contractors flooded the event walking through the tradeshow and visiting the various booths in the sold out Tradeshow. Simultaneously there were serveral mini technical sessions being hosted in breakout rooms on site. These mini technical sessions were greatly sucessful and featured various industyr professionals from across North America providing specialized training to all the local industry attendees. New technology, new ideas, and a ton of practical knowledge were tossed around throughout these sessions.
As the clock ticked on, the people kept filing in making the journey down to the extravaganza halls just in time for the traditional Tradeshow Wine and Cheese. With all the glasses empty and crumbs left on the cracker plates another sucessful tradeshow was being taken down to make way for the annual joint dinner meeting with the MCA / ASHRAE membership with our largest turnout of the year the attendees were treated to a wonderful persentation panel discussion on Lessons Learned from Commisioning moderated by our DL, Dennis Knight. Dennis capped off the evening with a brief presentation on his Lessons Learned from Commisioning highlighting some of the points raised from the panel consisting of Engineer Pat Fleming of KFR, Commisioning agent Jeff Kemps of Morrison Hershfield, and Contractor Mark Schendel of Schendel Mechanical.
Overall the day was a phenomonal success that woudl have not been possible without the support of the attendees and our sponsors :
Victaulic, Kehoe Equipment, EH Price, Carrier Canada, Aqua Air, EXEL Systems, Preston Phipps, and Arrow Engineering.

ASHRAE Presidential Member Lynn Bellenger Remembered
Immediate past ASHRAE President Lynn G. Bellenger, who served as the first woman president in the Society’s 116 year history, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19. She was president for the 2010-11 Society year, with her term ending in June 2011.Bellenger, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, was a recognized expert in energy management, with a strong focus on the need for energy modeling to help create and refine more efficient buildings. She was a partner, Pathfinder Engineers & Architects, Rochester, N.Y.
“We at ASHRAE are greatly saddened by the death of our former president and our friend,” Ron Jarnagin, ASHRAE president, said. “Her lifelong passion for engineering excellence resonated within our membership and our industry, inspiring us through her belief that engineers will lead an energy revolution with innovation. Through her service, she showed that there is a path available to all who wish to extend the influence of engineering principles to better serve the world we live in.”
As ASHRAE president, Bellenger focused on Modeling a Sustainable World, sharing her thoughts about the role of modeling tools and how all involved in the built environment industry must come together to take advantage of “the rich opportunities for optimizing building performance through a collaborative approach from the beginning.”
In an interview last year, Bellenger talked about her involvement in energy efficiency and how much has been put in recent years on the need to save energy.
“One of the cool things about the sustainability movement is that it has ignited a passion in people that is changing the world. That passion has brought a sense of energy and excitement to the industry and attracted people who are committed to designing and operating sustainable buildings. I don’t see that changing in the future,” she said.
Bellenger is a recipient of an ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award, a Distinguished Service Award, two first-place ASHRAE Technology Awards and the Lincoln Bouillon Membership Award.
She received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Principia College and a Master of Science in environmental science from Rutgers University.
Funeral arrangements are private.
If you would like to send your condolences please respond to publicrelations@ashrae.org. Messages will be assembled into a remembrance for the Bellenger family.
