2012 Region XI CRC was held in Winnipeg from held May 10 -13. Overall the experience was a success. In addition to the regular business meetings I was able to attend Regional Training on Student Activities, YEA, and CTTC. There was quite a bit of new information that was passed down and I will do my best to use this in bringing you the members a better product in 2013. In case you were wondering what the benefits of your chapter sending multiple officers to the Regional Conference, much of it comes in this training and the idea sharing that happens throughout the whole weekend. There were so many great ideas that came up and I am already getting excited for next year.

One of the general concerns that the regional delegates had was our finances, we acknowledged this and we have made corrective actions and are continuing to focus on this area. Another area of concern for us appeared to be the percentage of area assigned members paying society dues but not local dues as well. This money goes to help paying the expenses our chapter incurs and if people opt out of this it makes it difficult to continue provide the level of service that we currently enjoy.

If anyone has questions or comments please feel free to contact any one of your board members.

CTTC at CRC 2012 – after a great year of programs we are already planning next years activities. From attending this training came some great ideas and opportunities to again share Distinguished Lecturers with other chapters within our region. ASHRAE has increased funding for the DL program and we are looking forward to continuing with multiple visits again next year so we can utilize these great resources and bring them to our membership.

A survey tool for matching up the wants of the membership to the programs provided was discussed. This will be coming out shortly, please provide us with some feedback so we can focus on the areas that interest our membership for next year.

Many of the chapters were quite impressed and interested with the Mechanical Extravaganza and all the associated training that came with this which was a good discussion point. Thanks to the members for making that day a success, it was noticed not just locally but regionally as well.

As with everything comes planning and we will be putting our program together early and provide the membership with another fantastic year.

Student Activities at CRC 2012 – our chapter currently has a strong presence in the local post secondary schools, this will continue into next year. ASHRAE has developed an online database for activities to help out with presentations for our younger audience. That’s right K-12. There is a big push currently to get kids interested in science and peak there interest. Our current presentation that we have created and been presenting for the grade 3 Hot and Cold toic locally drew a lot of interest in discussions and I am working on sharing this information with a couple of other Region XI chapters.

As mentioned before if you are doing a presentation for any students please let us know. This work is appreciated and we would like to recognize that and track it.

During the SA training we worked in teams to do simple presentations focusing on science. This does not need to be directly related to HVAC&R to be noticed. All students minds are wanting to soak up information and we have a great opportunity to possibly peak the interest of younger students as well as Post Secondary. Help us help you.

We have one of the stronger presences among chapters in the local post secondary and this will continue next year.

YEA at CRC 2012 – another very successful part of our chapter was noticed at the CRC. Members 35 years and younger are becoming more active and bridging the age gap which is great to see and people were asking me about our YEA Activities and why we were having success with it.

I wanted to thank all our members YEA and General Membership for helping to make this program get traction in the NAC. During discussion about training , it was brought up to have more training that is geared to our younger members. HVAC Basics, soft skills, and volunteer opportunities seem to be where the focus of our YEA activities appear to be lacking a bit.

Younger members want to be involved but don’t necessarily know how to do this. Our YEA committee will be discussing plans for next year early so if there are any ideas please bring them forward. If you want to be involved raise your hand we are very friendly and tend to have a great time. Most other chapters have been embracing the YEA Leadership weekend and it has been paying back big time in most of these chapters with increased ASHRAE participation and passion after attending these courses. This topic will be coming up early in planning for next year to see if it is feasible.

We would like to offer a special invitation to all YEA Members, for our upcoming Technical Session on “Radiant Surfaces”!

This Technical Session is specifically geared towards our younger industry professionals.

Becoming proficient with newer technologies can be intimidating, so what better way to learn than from an Industry Expert?!

This presentation provides detailed information on the design, detailing and construction of radiant heating/cooling floors. Radiant heating/cooling floors provide an energy efficient means of providing exceptional comfort within living and working spaces, by exploiting three basic heat transfer phenomena: the separation of sensible and latent cooling, direct engagement of the building mass as a load leveling mechanism, and exploitation of the heat transport efficiency of hydronic systems. Discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of this technology will enable designers to determine where the system would be beneficial.

Presented by: Distinguished Lecturer Daniel Nall, FAIA, PE of Flack & Kurtz, Inc.

What a great day at the Granite Curling Club. Despite the dump of snow outside we had a great turnout of 46 curlers. First off we woudl like to thank all our competitors for braving the eelments and helping to make this day a great sucess.

Another huge thanks goes out to all teh people who dropped off prize donations. This chapter is very fortunate to have such great support from the local ASHRAE boosters. Contractors, Suppliers, Engineering Firms, and Individuals supporters you made this event another success.

The ‘A’ final was a matchup between two out of town teams featuring the Sakatoon Chapter Team vs. the Region XI team. After agreat battle the team from Saskatchewan takes the honour of being the 2012 John Ross Champion.

The ‘B’ side final was between the Kehoe Equipment Ltd team ,who had been abandoned by their illustrious leader, and the tough team from Stantec. This fantastic game was decided in the final end by inches. Bringing a draw at the end of the match skip stones were required to crown the ‘B’ side. Not even the first set of skipper stones could break the stalemate as the Stantec team fianlly was able to drive the nail in the coffin.

The ‘C’ side final was a matchup between the Iron Men Bartle and Gibson team thathad palyed every draw that day and the very social Engineered Air team. All the practice must have paid off as the B&G team took care of business to capture the ‘C’ crown.

See pictures from the day here.
