November Lunch Meeting

  • U of A Faculty Club 11435 Saskatchewan Drive Northwest Edmonton, AB, T6G 2G9 Canada (map)

We are very excited to welcome ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Greg Scrivener, Principal Engineer at Cold Dynamics, to our November Lunch meeting at the UofA Faculty Club.

Location: University of Alberta Faculty club, 11435 Saskatchewan Drive

Registration 11:30am

Lunch Presentation – 12pm to 1pm

Lunch presentation - Refrigeration Energy Essentials - A review of the basic vapour compression refrigeration cycle and refrigeration system components will be used to learn which parameters and design choices have the most impact on refrigeration and air conditioning system efficiency. The presentation will examine different control strategies and technologies that are used to increase refrigeration cycle efficiency such as floating head pressure, floating suction pressure, subcooling, expanders and ejectors. This topic will also explain coefficient of performance (COP) and how combined COP’s are used.

Afternoon course: 1:15pm until 3pm

Course details - Refrigerants: This course will provide a North American refrigeration safety code and standard update on activities related to the use of the flammable A2L refrigerants. Specifically, we will discuss the existing safety measures used to mitigate the risk of refrigerants and the proposed new safety measures in ASHRAE 15 for direct comfort cooling applications and for machine rooms (Addendum d and h). We will also discuss the results of some of the completed research and updates on the ongoing research into the operation and safe use of flammable refrigerants that is being funded by AHRI, DOE, and ASHRAE. Canadian refrigeration safety standards are in a bit of a unique situation because our main safety standard, CSA-B52 Mechanical Refrigeration Safety Code, is not adopted for small refrigeration system in most jurisdictions. This could lead to the significant use of flammable refrigerant in unregulated installations. With very little opportunity to enforce these installations, design engineers need to understand proper installation and risk mitigation measures.
