Hockey! with ASHRAE NAC

I am currently informally polling our ASHRAE members and entire HVAC industry to gauge interest about organizing a monthly pickup game.

The tentative plan is to book ice once a month sandwiched between our monthly dinner/lunch meetings. We are currently looking at scheduling either a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. The games would be open to all ages and skill levels, with an emphasis on camaraderie and the refreshments.

This would be a sponsored event so the cost would be reasonable per player, with all proceeds going towards the upcoming CRCs: 2019 in Alaska and 2020 in Edmonton.

If you are interested in being added to the list or have input on what day/time you would like to see please email me at lyle@exelsystems.ca

Lyle Van Wieren - Vice President 2018-2019

I am currently the ASHRAE NAC Vice President. As the vice President I spend the majority of my time helping the President and President-Elect with their tasks. I also try to help the CTTC chair.

This year I plan on starting a new ASHRAE tradition, monthly ASHRAE Hockey! This will be my 5th year volunteering with the board and I look forward to continuing my volunteering over the next three years.

I work as a sales engineer since graduating from Concordia University in Montreal six years ago. When I’m not working or volunteering for ASHRAE you can find me spending time with my family or playing hockey.

Adrian Beaudin - President-Elect 2018-2019

I work as an Account Manager within the HVAC sales industry in Edmonton, Alberta and have been in the industry for over 12 years. I’ve been an ASHRAE member for six years and have sat on the ASHRAE NAC Board of Governors for five of those six.

I am a Kimberley, BC native where I grew to have a passion for all sports, especially hockey. I now have a beautiful family with three kids and one super fat cat named Rodney.

I look forward to the upcoming year as your chapter’s President-Elect. I sincerely hope that as a society we embrace change, evolve, and appreciate building this great city and province together!

Justin Phill - Treasurer - 2018-2019

I am the ASHRAE Northern Alberta Chapter Treasurer this year, moving on from my position as Secretary last year. I’m looking forward to keeping track of the chapter’s finances, helping the new Secretary transition to their new position, and helping out the YEA and SA chairs.

This is my fourth year on the board. I’ve previously held positions as the Secretary as well as the YEA and SA chair.

When not helping out with ASHRAE, I work as a Mechanical Engineer who is primarily focused on energy modelling and sustainable design.

Outside of working hours you’ll find me doing something music related, from songwriting to DJ-ing.

Cody Byar - Student Activities & YEA Co-Chair 2017-2018 / 2018-2019

Cody Byar - Picture 200.png

My name is Cody Byar, I am a born and raised Edmontonian. I graduated from the Building Environmental Systems Technology Program at NAIT in 2016 and started working for my current employer straight out of school.

I took on the YEA/Student Activities Co-Chair position with Riyaz Khair again this year and enjoy meeting industry students and organizing ASHRAE events.

In my spare time I’m an avid skier in the winter and camper in the summer with my lovely wife. We enjoy spending time with our beagle, dwarfed schnauzer, and slightly neurotic cat. I’m also pursuing my Bachelor of Technology through NAIT.

I’m looking forward to another great year with ASHRAE!

Student Activities & Young Engineers in ASHRAE Co-Chair

I joined ASHRAE in my last year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta and met my now current employer at one of the Chapter’s monthly meetings. There, I get to work with today’s cutting edge tech in indoor-air-quality and room-level controls. I routinely came out to our chapter’s monthly meetings, but decided to get more involved the last couple years.

As part of the NAC Board of Governors, I reach out to students interested (or oblivious) about the building sciences industry - bolstering curiosity and questions. I work to bridge the gap between the students and the industry.

As part of YEA, I am working to foster the building sciences community amongst the young (young at heart!). Getting to know the people in your industry is great: other perspectives and experiences help you grow professionally and personally.

If you have suggestions, ideas, or just want to reach out – please do!

Wes Bruce - Research Promotion Chair 2018-2019 / Past President

Welcome to another busy year of ASHRAE! I’m happy to serve as your Research Promotion Chair for 2018-19.

The RP campaign is vital to the success of ASHRAE as a whole - RP supports international and local technical research projects, Education and ALI, Scholarships, and many other initiatives.

This technical research contributes to the development of standards, guidelines, procedures, tools, and even the ASHRAE handbooks we use religiously.

Since 1960, over 845 research projects valued at $67.5+ Million have been conducted through funding from ASHRAE Research.

Our chapter goal for this year is $12,250.00.

I would like to personally thank all of our RP sponsors, and look forward to continued success this year.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments with regards to RP, please reach out to me anytime.

A little bit about myself:

I was born and raised in rural southeastern Ontario, and relocated to Edmonton in 2006.

Having graduated from Mechanical Engineering Technology, I was initially employed in the automotive industry prior to establishing a career in HVAC/R.

I’ve been a member of ASHRAE since 2009, and proud to be a member of our tightly-knit industry.

I am a professional chemical engineer with over 10 years of experience managing facility-based projects, with focus on operational optimization.

I also have an extensive chemistry/laboratory background and am passionate about critical air systems with regards to both design and emerging technology.

My wife and I welcomed our first son in January 2018. If spare time existed, I would watch more football and play more hockey.
