Alex Forrest (1991 - 2024)

Please see the below message from Dana Heller, the SAC Historian.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I give you the sad news that the son of ASHRAE SAC past-president, Jack Forrest, and a long time SAC member himself, Alex Forrest, passed on last week.

As historian, I am tasked with informing members of these types of events, but when it is for someone so young and full of potential, it is especially difficult to send and I’m sure to hear.

Our hearts go out to Jack and his family. We have lost a great man and he will be missed by many in our community.

Please see his memorial tribute at the link below.  There will be a Memorial Service/ Celebration of Life towards the end of September TBA.”

Unfortunately this would be the last in person event of the season.

COVID-19 Pandemic

On March 5 the first presumptive case of COVID-19 was reported in Alberta. This would lead to massive changes to society over the next few months and beyond. As a result of the spread of COVID -19 through the province and the issuance of health orders, all non-essential businesses were closed and large gatherings were prohibited. This resulted in the offices of companies in our industry being closed with people having to work remotely from home. In person meetings were replaced with video conferences; construction activities were still allowed to continue but with additional health and safety measures in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic a number of chapter events were forced to be cancelled, including the March dinner meeting, the annual John Ross curling bonspiel, the April dinner meeting, and the annual golf tournament. Our chapter was also to host the Chapters Regional Conference at the end of April into early May – this event also had to be cancelled.

From a chapter operational standpoint, chapter board meetings were required to be conducted via videoconference instead of in person.

Spring Update

With everyone adjusting to the “new normal” brought on by the COVID pandemic, the chapter board decided to host an online video conference to provide an update on the chapter to its membership. The video meeting was held on Monday, May 21 and was well attended by chapter members.

June Meeting

The final event of the 2019-2020 season was held on Wednesday, June 17. The event was held via video conference and included Robert Peters with Rinnai Canada. Rob presented on common venting design for multi-family projects for domestic hot water systems.

Glen Tichkowsky - Co-Historian 2019-2020

This is my first year volunteering on the ASHRAE NAC board and am looking forward to help promote the history of the chapter and the industry in general.

I have been working in the HVAC industry for over 13 years as a consulting mechanical engineer focusing on mechanical design, sustainability, and energy modelling. I am an alumnus of the University of Alberta graduating in 2005 with a BSc and 2008 with a MSc, both in Mechanical Engineering.

I have lived in Edmonton my whole life. If you ask my wife or two young sons, they will tell you I spend too much time on sports – either playing, coaching, or watching.

Johann Haltiner - Co-Historian 2019-2020

I am very excited to serve this year as the ASHRAE Northern Alberta Chapter Historian co-chair. I will be compiling documents and items of historical value to the Chapter. This being my first year with ASHRAE, I was surprised how welcoming and friendly everyone was to newcomers. Looking forward to all of the fellowship, and camaraderie to come.

Having moved to Alberta from my home town of Montreal, I quickly decided to settle down and live my life here.  I currently work as an HVAC Counter Sales Associate.

On my time off I enjoy playing my Frame Drum, swimming, and reading.

History Report October 2018

Past President’s Night was held at our last meeting. We were pleased to have 11 Past Presidents in attendance.

A couple of goals I have this year as Historian is to update our President’s photo board and add a lot of content to our website, including our archive of photo albums we recently had scanned.

If you have any ASHRAE related events coming up that would have historical value, please contact me and I’ll ensure it gets documented.

Mark Henry - Chapter Historian

Mark Henry - Chapter Historian 2017-2018

I was born and raised in small town Saskatchewan.  I moved to Edmonton 17 years ago and continue to be a Saskatchewan Roughrider fan.  A nice bonus is that this annoys Tom Jacknisky.

After graduating from NAIT, I started out on the tools before joining a mechanical engineering firm for 10 years.  I’ve been on the sales side with my current employer for the last four years plus.

I’ve enjoyed my time on the Board as co-chair of Student Activities and the past few years as Chapter Historian.   I’m looking forward to my new position in the fall as Secretary.

I’ve been an ASHRAE member since 2011.  I’ve always enjoyed seeing everyone at the meetings/events, enjoying a good meal, and our speakers and lecturers.  It’s been great to spend time with other people in the industry.
